Home Renovation: Three Tips to Doing it Right

Home Renovation: Three Tips to Doing it Right

According to statistics from the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker, only 10% of Americans are looking to buy a new home. As a result, it’s no surprise that if you’re the one wanting to sell your home, you’re going to have to do more than mow the lawn.

In fact, 70% of homeowners have made plans for home improvement. If you’re one of them and plan on doing DIY home renovations to make your home like new again, check out the following tips so you do it right.

Be willing to do the dirty work

One of the best ways to revamp your home on a budget is by rolling up your sleeves and getting the dirty work done first.

Making simple changes to your home like clearing out dead brush in the front yard, scrubbing down walls in the basement, and steam cleaning tiles will make an immediate difference in the appearance of your home at face value.

Furthermore, to get the most out of your wall-to-wall cleaning, tackle areas that can be easily de-cluttered to make your home appear more spacious. Organizing closets, placing boxes in storage, and getting rid of unwanted furniture will clear up your home to take advantage of the room you already have.

Think of your target audience

If you’re at a loss about where to begin your renovations, consider your target audience first. If you happen to be one of the homeowners renovating for the purpose of putting your home on the market, it’s critical to keep your target buyer in mind.

While most real estate focuses on “location, location, location”, identifying your buyer is just as important if you want to seal the deal and make a sale (especially in this market).

Identifying your target audience can be achieved by talking with a real estate agent, reading listings in the local paper, or simply taking a walk through your neighborhood to see what the average homeowner is like.

For example, with a large, family home, renovations should cater to families with children by putting in a pool, a deck, or updating your kitchen. With a small condo, it may be wise to make renovations that appeal to singles or senior citizens by updating your garden, renovating your master bath, or making a small closet into a home office.

Take on the exterior

The exterior of your home is the first thing that people will notice when visiting for the first time. This is your opportunity to make a powerful impression on friends and family alike by starting with painting, landscaping, or building an outside deck that you can use to entertain guests in warmer weather.

One of the most affordable ways to renovate a home on a budget is by caring for your lawn and adding new plants. This can be done by almost any DIY homeowner, with or without landscaping experience.

For larger renovations to the exterior, as well as detailed landscaping, you may want to hire a contractor or landscaping company to assist you when using larger machinery for digging and excavating.

When it comes to DIY home improvement, the options are endless. For the best results, take the time to plan your budget carefully so that you can spend your money wisely on home renovations that will improve the value of your home and make it even more enjoyable to live in.
